How to crop an image

Cropping any image file
The file type is detected from the file’s own bytes, not its name, so a PNG that was saved as photo.jpg still opens correctly and keeps its transparency. iPhone HEIC photos open too — when the browser cannot read them itself, a decoder loads on the spot.

Common image crop jobs
- Cut out one part — drag the box around it; the rest is removed.
- Change the shape — pick 1:1, 4:5, 16:9 or type your own ratio.
- Hit an exact size — type width and height in pixels, or set an output size like 1200 × 630.
- Remove empty edges — Trim edges finds and removes uniform borders.

Frequently asked questions
Which image types can I crop?
JPG, PNG, WebP, AVIF, GIF (first frame), BMP and HEIC/HEIF open directly, and TIFF opens with a built-in decoder. SVG is a vector drawing rather than pixels, so export it to PNG first.
Does the file type change when I crop?
Not unless you ask. The default is “Same as original”, and the panel spells out what that resolves to. The one exception is HEIC, saved as JPG because so few apps outside Apple’s can open HEIC.
Can I crop an image that is inside a document?
Copy the image or take a screenshot, then paste it here with Ctrl/⌘ + V. Pasted images get a dated file name rather than a generic one.
